A Note on Altitude Sickness in Pets

When it comes to altitude sickness, the main difference between pets and humans is that your pets cannot communicate how they feel or improve their condition on their own. For that reason, it is important that you take steps to prevent altitude sickness in your pets just like you would for yourself.

Keep your pets hydrated, keep their physical activity to a minimum unless they’ve acclimated, and always monitor their behavior for signs of altitude sickness. The main thing you’ll want to watch out for is signs of exhaustion like panting or coughing, but if your pet is bleeding from their nose or vomiting then you should get them to a lower elevation as soon as possible.

While your pets should naturally acclimate to high altitudes if you’re spending a long period of time there, you can help them adjust by working wet food into their diet to keep them hydrated.
