Hiking & Backpacking

Enjoy late-summer hiking and backpacking in Mammoth along the many trails here, all of which offer stunning views. Either bring your own gear or get what you need when you get here at one of the local shops. Keep an eye out for secret alpine lakes and forest-draped hideaways as you explore.

Camping

Home to more than 800 campsites, the Mammoth area offers plenty of opportunities to get in touch with nature as summer comes to an end. If you’ll be driving here in your own RV, the Mammoth Mountain RV Park & Campground is one of the places where you can set things up once you arrive. Other campgrounds are located near popular area lakes, providing added opportunities to spend some of your time here fishing or enjoying water-based activities.

Biking & Climbing

Several Mammoth trails are designated for mountain and off-road biking. Another possibility is to mix camping with biking. This can be done conveniently at campgrounds offering direct trail access, like the nearby Hartley Springs and Obsidian Flat Group Campgrounds. Late summer is also a perfect time to enjoy climbing and mountaineering in Mammoth. Consider using a local guide service if you’ll be climbing to receive some personalized guidance.

Sightseeing

The casual days of late summer are ideal for sightseeing while visiting the Mammoth area. This is something you can do by leisurely walking along various pathways and trails as you view glassy blue lakes, meadows dotted with colorful wildflowers, natural hot springs, granite domes, and other natural and geologic wonders.

Swimming, Boating, Kayaking, & Paddleboarding

The waters in the many lakes throughout the Mammoth area are still very inviting and comfortable as summer winds down. You and anyone else in tow are free to enjoy a lazy day of casual swimming or having fun in a rental boat. If you prefer water adventure, consider renting a kayak or paddleboard here.
