Convict Lake
Definitely one of the frequently recommended fishing spots in the Mammoth area, Convict Lake is well known for its crystal-clear water. This also makes it easier to spot the large rainbow trout common here. A popular filming location for TV shows and movies, this pristine 170-acre lake is just 2 miles from Highway 395, and it’s stocked weekly. There’s also a small resort with cabin rentals right by the lake. Convict Lake is also home to many amenities and features that can make your fishing experience even more enjoyable, including:
• On-site boat rentals
• Nearby campgrounds
• Public showers
• An on-site general store
• A highly recommended restaurant
Tip: Fish where the ledge drops off into deeper water, since the fishing action tends to be especially good in this spot.
Crowley Lake
You may prefer Crowley Lake if you’re a bit more competitive as an angler. Home to a fishing camp, this lake is about 12 miles to the south of Mammoth Lakes. Offering 45 miles of shoreline, it’s stocked with an impressive assortment of rainbow trout, including:
• Eagle Lake trout—known for being hard fighters
• Kamloops—known for their strength and stamina
• Coleman trout—found more often in the deeper parts of the lake
Note: Only artificial lures can be used here from August 1st through mid-November.
The Mammoth Lakes Basin
Multiple angling opportunities abound in the Mammoth Lakes Basin. This is a great place to fish if you prefer convenient access to four main lakes in one spot: Twin Lakes, Lake Mary, Lake George, and Lake Mamie. Well stocked with trophy-sized rainbow and brown trout, these lakes have an assortment of appealing amenities that make the fishing experience even more convenient, including:
• On-site boat rentals
• Tackle shops at some locations
• Scenic lakefront camping if you prefer easy access to the lakes during your visit
Mammoth Creek
If you have an appreciation for off-the-beaten-path locations with great fishing, steer your way toward Mammoth Creek. It has a reputation locally for being a perfect place to catch pan-sized wild brown and rainbow trout. You’ll find Mammoth Creek along the area known as Old Mammoth Meadow just below Highway 395. It’s a smaller 10-mile stream that’s often less crowded than the more popular spots in the area.
Sherwin Lakes
Located off Sherwin Creek Road, Sherwin Lakes is actually a pair of small subalpine lakes with some fantastic fishing. Not far from town, it’s accessible via a well-maintained hiking trail. Brook trout can be easily spotted here right from the shore, so there’s not much effort required to set yourself up for a day of fishing.
