Walk Around Convict Lake
There aren’t many bad places to take a walk outside in the Mammoth Lakes area, but Convict Lake is one of the best thanks to its easy trail, beautiful views, and the other recreation options nearby.
To start, Convict Lake has a three-mile trail that surrounds the entire lake and makes for excellent walking. Not only will the walk around the lake give you spectacular views of the soaring mountains nearby, but the trail is mostly flat and even making it easy to walk while keeping track of your entire family, pets included.
On top of that there are also camping spots near the lake, fishing in the pristine water, and a resort where you can eat, stay, or play with a boat rental from the marina.
Spring Skiing at Mammoth Mountain
When snow starts falling by the foot in Mammoth Lakes, it can be hard to keep up with where to ride while keeping track of everyone in your family in storm conditions, especially if you’re all riding at different levels.
However, during spring there are warmer temperatures, softer snow, and the best snow tends to be on the groomed runs where everyone can ride together and in sight of one another. How much of Mammoth Mountain is open during the spring depends on that season’s weather and snowfall amounts, but generally at least part of the mountain will be open for skiing and snowboarding well into May and possibly beyond.
Learn to Mountain Bike at Mammoth Mountain
If you’ve missed the snow at Mammoth Mountain, then you and your family can still have fun on the mountain.
Although Mammoth Mountain Bike Park has plenty of expert bike trails higher up the slopes, there are plenty of options for those who are still getting their wheels under them. For example, near the Adventure Center at Main Lodge you’ll find several beginner and kid friendly mountain bike trails serviced by a lift that makes taking laps a breeze.
Not only can you build mountain biking skills in the beginner area, but you can also try out mountain biking on an e-bike at Mammoth Mountain or take a lesson from a world-class instructor. Class 1 pedal assist bikes are allowed on trails.
Walk Through the Lakes Basin Once it has Opened
The Lakes Basin is one of the prettiest and most accessible areas in all of Mammoth Lakes thanks to the beautiful lakes and paved walking and biking path that connects to the Village. However, before you and your family can walk there the snow must clear from the area.
The Lakes Basin opens at a different time each year based on weather and snowfall, so check ahead of time to see the status of the trails there!
Fish Throughout Mono County
