What’s a Pond Skim?
You would think that in a place that has as much beautiful terrain and snow as Mammoth Lakes, spring and its warm temperatures wouldn’t be welcomed by the locals.
Even though melting snow means no skiing or snowboarding it also means that hiking, fishing, climbing, and many other outdoor activities will be options in Mammoth Lakes soon. That’s something to celebrate, and Mammoth Mountain does so by creating a 100-foot pond near Canyon Lodge and allowing skiers and snowboarders to test their skill at gliding across the water on their skis or board.
Why You Should Attend Mammoth Mountain’s Pond Skim
Pond skims are not unique to Mammoth Mountain, but the scale and energy behind it are.
Mammoth Mountain makes the pond skim a true party by only allowing participants to compete if they’re in a costume, holding the event near the deck of Canyon Lodge where spectators can enjoy drinks, food, and views, and allowing other attendees to watch from all over the slope and around the pond itself.
All of that plus the warm weather creates an incredible atmosphere that can’t be missed. Between the pond skim participants trying to skim across the water in costume and the crowd cheering them on, the Mammoth Mountain pond skim is a must even if you’re not staying around for the afterparty.
When and Where to Find the Mammoth Mountain Pond Skim
This year the Mammoth Mountain pond skim will be on April 17th starting at 2 pm just outside of Canyon Lodge.
If you’d like to participate in the pond skim then you’ll have to arrive earlier than that though. The first 50 participants to register for the event will be accepted. Registration begins at 8 am at Canyon Lodge, but all participants must be in costume or otherwise they will not be allowed to register!
Don’t Forget the Afterparty
If you haven’t had enough snow, views, and music at Canyon Lodge then Mammoth Mountain has the perfect event for you.
The pond skim afterparty will begin at 4 pm at Canyon Lodge so that participants and everyone who watched them try to skim across the water can celebrate the event and the end of another incredible ski season at Mammoth Mountain!
